Activision Blizzard announces Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 may not release in 2021

Activision Blizzard announced today that both Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4, the next entries in two of the developer’s best-selling IPs, may be delayed beyond 2021.

Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 were originally announced at BlizzCon 2019 and received massive hype from the community. However, while the news of delays broke during the company’s Q4 earnings call, there were few explanations given as to why progress has slowed at Blizzard. The announcement came alongside news thatCall of Duty would receive a new title this year, as expected. Of course, Blizzard Entertainment works separately from the developers of COD.

Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 not expected to release in 2021

The news is disappointing for both communities. Diablo fans have been without a new installment since 2012’s Diablo III, and Overwatch fans have been craving a new experience since the sequel’s announcement halted most new content for the original game.

Diablo fans, at least, have been on this rollercoaster before. Diablo III was announced in 2008 and wasn’t released until mid-2012. This was preceded by Diablo II’s release in 2000, so these long wait times are typical.

There’s currently no news on how this might affect the Overwatch League. Depending on the title’s release date, we may see up to two more seasons played with the original Overwatch with no new characters in sight.

Additional news surrounding both titles could come later in the year but nothing is expected at this time. Stay tuned to Daily Esports for any updates on the situation.
