How to unlock Sephiroth in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Final Fantasy VII’s dreamy villain Sephiroth is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as DLC on December 22. For impatient fans who can’t wait until then, there is a way to unlock Sephiroth early. Thanks to a limited-time challenge, Sephiroth is available for players who purchased the DLC now.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate owners who have pre-purchased the Sephiroth DLC, either as the individual character or through the Fighters Pass Vol. 2, have access to the Sephiroth challenge. The Challenge has players fighting a powerful version of Sephiroth, on either Easy, Normal, or Very Hard. Once beaten, Sephiroth becomes a playable fighter. A new stage, Northern Cave, and nine brand new Final Fantasy music tracks become available as well.

How to beat Sephiroth in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Instead of a stock battle, the Sephiroth Challenge has players competing in a stamina match. On normal, both players start at 150.0% HP and the first to zero loses. Players are going to want to watch out for Sephiroth’s ranged attacks and the length of his sword. Sephiroth excels at keeping his distance and punishing slow attacks. Keep the distance close and don’t give Sephiroth time to recover.

The match isn’t too difficult, though going into the fight without knowing any of Sephiroth’s attacks might cause some difficulty. Take your best fighter in, and Sephiroth will be unlocked in no time.

Worst case, players can always pick easy mode and cheese it with a powerful attacker like Bowser.

Challenger Pack 8 can be purchased for $5.99 from the Nintendo Switch eShop. Along with Sephiroth, the pack comes the Northern Cave stage and nine new tracks. The Fighter Pass Vol. 2 includes Steve and Alex from Minecraft and Min Min from Arms, as well as their respective stages and music tracks. Three more fighters are coming to Smash Ultimate, although Nintendo has yet to reveal who they might be. The Fighter Pass Vol. 2 costs $29.99.
