There likely won’t be any big updates to Overwatch until after BlizzCon

Ever since Blizzard officially revealed Overwatch 2 at Blizzcon last year, Overwatch fans have eagerly awaited more news about the upcoming title. This anticipation only grew after Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan told fans that Echo would be the last Hero until Overwatch 2.

Unfortunately, we haven’t heard much about Overwatch 2 outside of leaks and rumors. On the bright side, we now have a date where we can expect with near-certainty to hear more about the game. Blizzard announced that an online version of Blizzcon will take place on February 20 and 21 in 2021. While this is great news, it still leaves us with almost five months without any hope for new content.

Overwatch probably won’t be any new Heroes or maps until after Blizzcon

Jeff Kaplan will probably make good on his word not to release any new Heroes before Overwatch 2, which means that the most exciting form of new content is off the table. It also seems equally unlikely that we will get a new map before then. This means that there will only be balance updates and seasonal events.

While balance updates and seasonal events are great, they aren’t overly exciting either. Balance updates help create diversity in the meta, which always helps, but they don’t present any new content. The seasonal events come with new cosmetic content, but they are repetitive and predictable and don’t offer anything new in terms of gameplay.

Looking to the future

Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long after Blizzcon to get our hands on some new content. Since we haven’t heard anything from Blizzard about Overwatch 2, there’s the chance that the game will be close to release by then.

Between now and Blizzcon, there’s the Holloween event, the Christmas event, and the Lunar New Year event. We will also be getting new comics each month. While it’s not much, at least we know we have some Overwatch content to look forward to.
