Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is finally headed to iOS. Fans can experience the free-to-play game on mobile devices starting Oct. 29. Most importantly, all progress — including card collections — will carry over from the PC version of the game.
Gwent began life as a minigame in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, featuring collectible cards scattered all throughout the game world. Then, at E3 2016, CD Projekt Red revealed it would be turned into a standalone product. The card-based combat also served as the inspiration for a standalone title called Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, an isometric role-playing game which uses Gwent to fuel its combat and non-combat encounters.
Unlike other CCGs like Hearthstone and Magic: The Gathering, Gwent is played with multiple rows. Each row confers different offensive and defensive benefits depending on which cards are played there. Standalone Gwent initially stumbled out of the gate, in part because of how this mechanic was implemented. That led to a complete overhaul of the core gameplay.
“We have never accepted ‘good enough’ at our company,” write CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwiński in an open letter to the community in early 2018. “We have always taken risks and made bold decisions if we believed they would result in a better game.”
The end result of that overhaul is a more balanced and tactical experience. The results appear to have been well-received by the community.

To prepare for the release of Gwent on iOS fans can “pre-order” the game — which is free — on Apple’s App Store. The developer says that pre-orders will help make sure they’re ready to go on day one. To carry over progress from the PC version of the game players will need to use their GoG credentials to log in on iOS.
