Freedom of choice is something that most video games have been pushing strongly for quite some time. The binary idea of just killing your foes leaves no room for those who want to take out enemies without snuffing their lives out in the process. This is something that modern games have implemented quite well, allowing players to experiment quite a bit with the range of options they have while tacking these situations.
However, at times, players who opt for a non-lethal approach end up missing out on some of the best moves in their respective games, which can prove to be very annoying. A great example of this is Dishonored — a game that has amazing and brutal stealth gameplay which you won't even be able to enjoy if you opt for a pacifist and low Chaos playthrough. Thankfully, the following games managed to make non-lethal combat both accessible and entertaining.
8 Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided features one of the best hubs in gaming along with a myriad of really good combat options. The best part about this game is that it expands the repertoire of flashy non-lethal attacks and the like that can be carried out, as compared to the prequel.
For starters, the amazing Typhoon Explosive System now has non-lethal options for those who don't want there to be too many casualties. It makes for a great time as you blast through rooms of enemies with fast-paced combat options without having to worry about their lives.
7 Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that offers a wealth of options to deal with most encounters. While players can definitely go all-out and kill everyone who opposes them, they can also be sneaky and incapacitate enemies without snuffing their lives out.
It helps that the latest build of the game is pretty stable and offers many options to make the title more challenging. With a host of cyberware mods to turn even the most destructive playstyles into non-lethal ones, Cyberpunk 2077 is a story-heavy game that fans of fast-paced and numerous combat options will have a great time with.
6 Watch Dogs 2
Watch Dogs 2 is pretty much the perfect sequel that expands on everything that was established in the first game. Featuring a wide array of options that you can use for both exploration and combat, Watch Dogs is a fun romp from start to end.
It helps that Marcus is a way more likable protagonist than Aiden Pearce, who can actually use a wide array of non-lethal options in the game to make him less of a homicidal maniac. The game might not be perfect but is still the definitive Watch Dogs experience.
5 Batman: Arkham Knight
The Batman: Arkham series lets players control a character who will do everything in his power to stop criminals without killing them. That being said, knocking enemies into unconsciousness is something that is made infinitely fun in the Batman: Arkhan games.
Arkham Knight takes this combat to a whole new level, featuring everything from multi-chain Fear Takedowns to letting players mow over enemies with the Batmobile. The fact that none of these actions result in the death of enemies is hard to believe, but that's part of what makes these games so great in the first place.
4 Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
No Metal Gear Solid game has gameplay as tight and refined as that featured in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. The game is truly special, and Kojima's influence has helped it become one of the best stealth-action games around.
The sheer diversity players have in combat makes for a blast, with non-lethal approaches being quite viable. That being said, you do need to hurry up and complete missions quickly if you wish to keep every enemy alive in the game, since you can cause some serious issues after awakening from their forced slumbers.
3 Fallout: New Vegas
For a game that was developed in less than two years, it's amazing to see just how deep and engaging the roleplaying is in Fallout: New Vegas. Many people consider it to be one of the best games in the Fallout series simply because of the impressive depth of its role-playing.
Players can either sneak their way through hostile areas or smooth-talk their way through tough situations. This diversity in choice when it comes to every mission is why New Vegas is lauded by so many fans as one of the best games around.
2 Marvel's Spider-Man
Marvel's Spider-Man is easily the best Spider-Man game to date. The open world is detailed and exciting to explore, with the gameplay truly making you feel like the iconic web crawler, as clichéd as that line may be.
Spider-Man is another superhero who tries to avoid any casualties, whether friend or foe. This is shown quite creatively in Marvel's Spider-Man, with the character webbing enemies to the building if they're falling off.
1 Alpha Protocol
Alpha Protocol is a highly underrated game that you need to check out, especially if you love playing through fun spy adventures. The game is genuinely amazing as a role-playing title that lets you take on the role of a spy who can take on the personas of any of the three iconic JBs of espionage — James Bond (suave), Jason Bourne (professional), or Jack Bauer (aggressive).
Players who manage to get into this title will enjoy a pretty decent game indeed. It provides enough options that help you avoid conflict, with a smooth tongue and covertness being just enough to avoid combat in most battle-heavy zones.
