Steam’s July 2020 top releases report is here, and as a reminder on how the list is created, Steam bases it on revenue generated in the first two weeks after a game’s release. The platform also publishes a list of the top five monthly free-to-play releases measured by total unique player-count.
July’s top releases are quite diverse in terms of developers and countries. It’s very different from the August top releases where EA held eight of the 20 titles. Death Stranding, of course, is here on the July top release list.
That aside, action-adventure RPGs and JRPGs are well-represented. They’re the largest category and include The Wind Road 紫塞秋风, Neon Abyss, Blightbound, Hellpoint, Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris, and Fairy Tail. Though they all fall somewhere in the spectrum of action-centered adventure RPGs, the art styles and narratives vary to a great degree. Some are dungeon crawlers, while others take place in a fictionalized Silk Road era. Check out each of the games’ linked Steam pages for more detailed information.
Two pleasant remakes of classics also made the top release list: Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town and Destroy All Humans! The first is a remake of Friends of Mineral Town on the Game Boy Advance and is a charming farming simulation. The second is a remake of a 2005 title under the same name and is an action-adventure game where you play as an evil alien rampaging in the 50’s.
Top release strategy games are three very different ones. There’s puzzle shooter Superhot: Mind Control Delete, turn-based Othercide, and a chess game with a twist titled 5D Chess With Multiverse Time Travel.
The top five free-to-play games are Star Wars: The Old Republic, Soda Dungeon 2, 雀魂麻將(MahjongSoul) (not available to play in the USA, unfortunately), King of Crabs, and Devolverland Expo. You can check out the full list of July top releases on Steam.
