Amazon's Best Tech and Gaming Deals: August 2019

During any given day, Amazon offers loads of deals on games and tech, but the deals aren't always easy to find. Unlike brick-and-mortar retailers, Amazon doesn't issue a flyer on Sunday, nor does it go out of its way to advertise the best discounts on the site itself. If you could use some help staying on top of Amazon's best deals, keep on reading. We've combed through the best-selling items, hand-picked the most appealing discounts, and listed them below for your convenience. Read on for the deals.

Amazon's Regular Deals

Today's Deals: Each day, Amazon offers daily deals on a new (okay, sometimes recycled) selection of products. This is a good page to check to peruse to see what's on sale any given day.

Deal of the Day: Amazon's Deal of the Day items can come from a wide variety of product categories, and they're on sale each day until midnight Eastern time.

Lightning Deals: Just like Deal of the Day, these deals can be on any category of item, but the discounts only last for short periods of time (generally several hours or until stock runs out).

Woot Deals: Amazon owns Woot, so you can find the day's Woot deals on Amazon as well.

Amazon Outlet: Amazon Outlet is where you can find discounted overstock items. It has everything from baby products and electronics to furniture, games, automotive, and apparel, all grouped by category.

Amazon Warehouse: If you don't mind buying used items, you can find discounts on them in Amazon Warehouse. Like Amazon Outlet, Warehouse is divided up into categories covering things like TVs, computers and tablets, unlocked cell phones, and the like.

Refurbished Deals: If you want tech that's been used but inspected and made like-new, check out the Refurbished Deals hub, where you'll find things like laptops, drones, routers, and more.

Tips for Finding Game and Tech Deals on Amazon

For reasons known only to Amazon, you often won't find the best game and tech deals listed on the pages above. Instead, Amazon often quietly matches the sale prices of its competitors without advertising the discounts. So if you see an item you want on sale at Best Buy, GameStop, or Walmart, you might want to do a quick search to see if Amazon has matched the deal. Alternately, you can see a limited selection of each day's featured game and tech deals here:

Amazon Prime

If you do a lot of shopping at Amazon, it's probably worth getting an Amazon Prime membership. A Prime membership costs $12.99 per month or $119 for a year, though students get an even better deal: $6.49 per month, or $59 for a year.

Prime gets you free two-day shipping on many items on Amazon, which can make your subscription quickly pay for itself if you place lots of orders. It also gets you access to Prime Video, where you'll find lots of movies and TV shows, plus original content like Jack Ryan and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Prime members can also stream a large selection of songs from Prime Music.

Amazon Prime is a particularly fantastic deal for anyone with a gaming PC. Link your Amazon account with Twitch (also owned by Amazon), and you'll get a batch of free PC games each month, as well as occasional free in-game items in titles like Overwatch, Fortnite, and Warframe.

Free Trials

Amazon is rife with subscription services, and each one offers a free trial.

Amazon Prime: You can get a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime to see if you like the service (students get a six-month trial). If you find it's not for you, you can cancel before your first charge.

Kindle Unlimited: This subscription gets you access to over a million ebooks and over a thousand audiobooks to peruse at your leisure. It starts with a 30-day free trial, after which it costs $9.99 per month. As always, you can cancel any time.

Amazon Music Unlimited: This is basically Amazon's version of Spotify, with a similar number of songs you can stream from devices like your phone, tablet, computer, or Echo. It starts with a 30-day free trial, and it costs $7.99 per month after that.

Audible: Audible is an audiobook subscription service that lets you listen to audiobooks and a growing library of Audible exclusives. It starts with a 30-day free trial that also gets you two audiobooks and two Audible originals to keep forever. After that, the price is $14.95 per month, but you'll get one audiobook and two Audible originals per month. Again, you can cancel any time.

Amazon Credit Card and Store Card

Using an Amazon card gets you a percentage back on any money you spend on the site. Here are two popular choices.

  • Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Credit Card: This is a great option for Amazon Prime members who order a lot of items through Amazon or shop at Whole Foods. It's a Chase card with no annual fee, but it gets you 5% back on purchases from Amazon and Whole Foods. (If you cancel your Prime membership, this drops to 3%). You also get 3% back on purchases from gas stations, restaurants, and drug stores. All other purchases get you 1% back.
  • Amazon.com Store Card: This store card only works at Amazon.com, but it has no annual fee, and it also gets you 5% back on Amazon purchases as long as you're a Prime member. You can also use it for special financing on items above certain price thresholds.

Amazon Price Tracking

If you're not sure if a deal you find on Amazon is good or not, copy the URL and paste it in the search field on Camelcamelcamel, an oddly-named Amazon price tracker. Here you can see how much any item on the site has cost in the past.
