While the upcoming Avengers game from Square Enix will start out with only six playable heroes, it’s no secret that more are planned for the future.
Aside from the officially announced Hawkeye and Spider-Man (with the latter being a controversial PlayStation exclusive), dataminers seem to have uncovered an additional three: War Machine, She-Hulk, and Kate Bishop.
Those were surprising choices as they seemed likely to be clones of existing characters, but now another dataminer claims to have discovered references to brand new playable characters in the code for the PC beta release.
According to dataminer GregDSanders, each of these characters is listed with an ‘UnlockPlayableCharacter_’ prefix, which does seem to confirm that they will all be made playable and aren’t simply side characters.
Not counting the already confirmed heroes, the list consists of:
- Black Panther
- Captain Marvel
- Doctor Strange
- Kate Bishop
- Scarlet Witch
- War Machine
- Winter Soldier
All in all, it’s a pretty safe list of characters, as most of them are well-known thanks to their appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The likes of Quake and Mockingbird, though, are somewhat surprising as they are much less mainstream, with their most prominent on-screen appearances being in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show.
The most obscure though is probably Mar-Vell, who in the comics was the original male Captain Marvel but was portrayed by Annette Bening in the movie.
Ant-Man’s inclusion is interesting, as Hank Pym, who first held the mantle, was shown off as part of the E3 2019 reveal, where he used a shrink ray against a giant enemy.
However, it didn’t necessarily confirm that he was playable, and he wasn’t even wearing the Ant-Man suit.
It’s possible that, instead, players will instead control former thief Scott Lang, who inherited the Ant-Man moniker after Hank and was the iteration of the character that featured in the movies.
None of this can be considered concrete and plans could always change. But, it’d certainly be surprising if Black Panther and Doctor Strange, to name but two, weren’t in it.
Avengers will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on 4 September, with releases on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X to follow.
