It looks like the much-rumoured battle royale mode for Modern Warfare really is happening, as a new menu hints at its addition.
The season 2 update for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare is live now and it brings with it all the new maps, weapons, and extras (including fan favourite character Ghost) that were already leaked a while back.
But what it also adds is evidence to back up rumours that the game is getting a battle royale mode, just like last year’s Black Ops 4.
At the very least we know that Activision are planning to add new modes as the season goes on and there’s a big option labelled ‘Classified’ that’s suddenly appeared on the main menu with no explanation.
But more than that the intro cut scene for Season 2 features a mysteriously large map that doesn’t seem to be any of the normal ones scheduled for the rest of the season.
Rumours of a battle royale mode have existed almost since the game first came out, with some of the earliest suggesting that it would allow for up to 200 players.
More recently, what seems to be the loading screen for the mode leaked, and before that what is supposedly a map of the in-game area.
Whether any of these specific leaks are true is still unknown, but we’re getting into a no smoke without fire situation here, where a battle royale mode looks not only inevitable but imminent.
At the moment the best guess is that the mode will switch on either at the end of Season 2 or the start of Season 3.
As of this week, Season 2 only has three new maps (Rust, Atlas Superstore, and Zhokov Boneyard), with Bazarr and Khandor Hideout coming later.
A number of more minor new modes are also planned for later in the season, including the limited time Gunfight Tournament, Demolition, Infected Ground War, and NVG Reinforce.
After that that though? Perhaps that’s when battle royale will finally return to Call Of Duty.
