Digital Board Game Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace Launches On March 23

Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace, a digital board game developed by Luckyhammers and published by Asmodee Digital, is set to launch for PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam on March 23.

The game’s description on Steam reads, “Inspired by the award-winning board game franchise, Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace is an investigation game served with turn-based combat, set in the haunted worlds of H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos. Plunge into an original story written by Fantasy Flight Interactive’s official writers and explore the American Roaring Twenties.”

In the game, which is set in 1926, an astronomy professor is found murdered in her mansion. Players can choose from one of the twelve investigators featured in the Arkham Horror games, each of which posses a unique set of skills, to solve the professor’s mysterious death.

Arkham Horror, a co-op adventure board game designed by Richard Launius, was originally published in 1987 by Chaosium. Based the publisher’s RPG Call of Cthulhu, set in the Cthulhu mythos of H.P. Lovecraft and other horror writers, the game was described by Ken Rolston as his “first choice for a board game with [fantasy role-playing game] feel. It has everything I want in this respect,” in the April 1991 edition of Dragon.

A second edition of the game was released by Fantasy Flight Games in 2005. A third edition, which includes design elements from Eldritch Horror and Arkham Horror: The Card Game, was released in 2018. An expansion, Dead of Night, followed on October 8, 2019, and a second expansion, Under Dark Waves, was released on September 18. 2020.

Montreal-based studio Luckyhammers, the developer behind Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace, reportedly shut down in 2019. The game, which was originally announced as a PC-only title in April 2018 under the name Mansions of Madness: Mother’s Embrace, was due to be released in the first quarter of 2019. Although its unclear how the game was completed, Asmodee Digital has seemingly managed to see the game past the finish line.

Pre-orders for Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace are available now on Microsoft Store, Nintendo eShop, and Steam.
