There’s nothing like a callback to the bygone days of youth to promote a long-running franchise. A recent Japanese live-action trailer for the upcoming Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has those callbacks in spades. With the tagline “We’re all Goku,” the ad focuses on flashbacks from a player’s life, showing the times he imitated his animated hero across the years.
The entire ad is in Japanese, but it covers such a universal idea that it’s well worth a watch even if you don’t know a single word of the language.
The ad makes a point of tying this childhood nostalgia to the act of playing the new game, switching back and forth between old memories and sitting down to play the title. It’s enough to make me nostalgic, and I never even watched Dragon Ball Z as a kid.
The reason the ad is so effective is that, even if we weren’t Dragon Ball Z fans back in the day, almost all of us have memories of imitating our childhood heroes in some way. If we think back, we’ll find some time in the past when we pretended we were a fictional character. Whether that time was in front of the mirror, on a playground, or preparing to raid a top-secret military base in the Nevada desert, we’ve all shared this same kind of moment.
From what we know about the game so far, it looks to make good on its promise of a nostalgia-filled experience. The action RPG will follow the plot of the anime and manga, letting players travel through massive environments as they battle against classic enemies that they saw on their televisions.
It’s worth noting that will also be new characters designed by series creator Akira Toriyama, along with a little bit of creative license taken during some side-quests. Overall, the story will remain faithful to the original anime run.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is scheduled to release in January 2020 on Steam, Xbox One and Playstation 4. Unfortunately for Nintendo fans, a Switch release does not appear to be in the cards.
