Much like other From Software games, Elden Ring's story leaves a lot of room for player interpretation and speculation, and the writing of George R.R. Martin for the game has taken the mysterious aspects of the world to new heights. The environments and inhabitants of the Lands Between have piqued the interest of players, and many have come up with their own ideas and theories about the mysterious aspects of the game.
Theories about the world, timeline, characters, and enemies have been shared among Elden Ring fans ever since the game's first trailer was shown back in 2019. And now that many players have fully explored and finished the game, there are more fan theories to keep our minds busy and speculate about the experience. Many of these theories speculate about different endings or story elements that won't come to light until later stages of the game, so be wary of spoilers going forward.
8 Naming The Mount Torrent To Prevent Piracy
The controls and movement of the mount in Elden Ring are really responsive and smooth, and many players have grown fond of their trusty companion, Torrent. While the name of the mount sounds cool, there might be another reason behind choosing this particular name.
Some fans have suggested that the developers have chosen the name Torrent to prevent piracy via torrent file sharing sites. The idea seems so simple and yet so brilliant that it might just be true. After all, when you search Elden Ring torrent, you will most likely find links about the horse rather than illegal copies of the game.
7 Painted World Theory
Paintings have a significant role in Elden Ring as well as other Soulsborne games. In Elden Ring, they are collectibles that can lead to valuable rewards if you find the location depicted within. But there might be a deeper connection between The Lands Between and the Dark Souls universe through paintings.
At the end of Dark Souls 3's Ringed City DLC, the painting woman starts to paint a new world using the Blood of the Dark Soul given to her. As suggested by Reddit user u/TheMasterlauti, this new world can be what we later get to know as The Lands Between.
6 White Mask Varre Killed Our Maiden
Right at the beginning of the game, in the Chapel of Anticipation, we come upon the lifeless body of a maiden. Some players speculated that she was a maiden to our character. Later on, when we emerge into Limgrave for the first time, we meet White Mask Varre, who is waiting for us. He tells us about the path to Stormveil Castle and feels sorry that we are maidenless.
White Mask Varre is a manipulative character and hated by players who follow his questline, but some believe he was actually the one who killed our maiden. There is some evidence backing this theory, such as him waiting for us and knowing about the fate of our maiden at the very beginning. We even have to kill another maiden or go back and find the body of our maiden as part of his quest.
5 Each Ending Is A Prequel To Another From Software IP
There are six possible endings to Elden Ring, and each one leaves the world in a different state after the game is finished. Three of these endings, in particular, seemed familiar to some Soulsborne fans. Hence, the idea that they are each prequel to other games. Initially suggested by the Reddit user u/theodis09, there are some thematic connections between these endings and previous Soulsborne games.
The Frenzied Flame ending destroys the Golden Order, which some fans think become the undead we see in the Dark Souls. The Age of Stars ending's emphasis on lunar magic and the moon replacing the Erdtree, have thematic similarities to the Bloodborne universe. And the final theorized connection between the Destined Death ending and Demon Souls universe, while not as strong as the other two, still makes sense as they both deal with matters of death and destiny.
4 The Lands Between Is Another Planet In The Dark Souls Universe
Yet another theory to link Elden Ring to previous From Software games, suggests that The Lands between is a far-off planet in the same universe as the Dark Souls games. It's undeniable that there are similar elements between all soulsborne games, but Reddit user u/GlamdringBeater has found some compelling evidence to back this theory.
The main idea for this theory is that the dragons we find in The Lands Between, are the descendants of ancient dragons who fled Dark Souls' world, Lordran, after the age of fire. The descriptions of some dragon-related items found in Elden Ring, and the history of the war between dragons and the Golden Order, can back this theory up.
3 Ranni Planned The Shattering
Ranni the witch, the former shard bearer of the Elden Ring, is one of the main characters that we meet in the game. She has an extensive questline in which we learn more about her and the history of the world. But she might have had even more involvement in the events of the shattering that she lets on.
Based on the theory shared by Reddit user u/McPunchins, Ranni might be the one who started the chain of events that lead to the shattering of the Elden Ring. In defiance of the Greater Will, she ended her life and freed herself from the influence of her great rune, and she tried to free other shard bearers from the same fate, which finally lead to the destruction of the Elden Ring.
2 The Jellyfish Are The Spirits Of Children
The Lands Between is full of hostile and peaceful creatures. Some monsters attack the tarnished on sight, some might run away, and some don't seem to be bothered by our presence unless we attack them. One such creature is the floating jellyfish that we find all around the world, and there might be a particularly dark story to their existence.
First brought up by the Reddit user u/FreeWatercressSalad who found small graves belonging to the spirit ash jellyfish Aurelia and her sister, these creatures might be the reincarnated spirit of the children who died in The Lands Between. Considering this sad fate, you might think twice before attacking the peaceful jellyfish for a measly amount of runes.
1 The Intersection Of The Divine Towers Points To Future DLC
The map of Elden ring is huge, and most of the cities and important locations in the world have asymmetrical and organic placements, except for the six divine towers. These towers have precise placements, and drawing a line between them points to a particular location in the middle of the map.
As discovered by the Reddit user u/Dvoraxx, the center of all these towers point to a particular location on the map that is currently hidden beneath a large cloud. Every fan of the game is wondering and excited about From Software's future plans for Elden Rings, and this location might be hiding some interesting stories to tell in a future DLC.
