Europe-Based Sony XDEV Is Helping Team Ninja Develop Rise Of The Ronin

Team Ninja is working closely with the European-based Sony XDEV team to bring its historic samurai action Rise of the Ronin to PlayStation 5. The latter studio is known for its work with Sony's third-party projects, such as Until Dawn, Detroit: Become Human, and Returnal.

Rise of the Ronin is "the most ambitious and challenging" game to date for Team Ninja, so it's no wonder it needed some assistance in tackling such a complex project. The game was announced as a PS5 exclusive and will be published by Sony. And we now know that it's being overseen by XDEV studio, a first-party business unit previously responsible for handling several projects developed by external European studios.

Senior producer Jason Stewart took to Twitter to say that he is "privileged to work on an exciting title" Rise of the Ronin with Team Ninja's president Yasuda-san. Stewart also shared some pictures taken while visiting the Meiji Jingu Shrine in Japan, most likely as a business trip for inspiration and reference.

Rise of the Ronin has been a long journey for Team Ninja, as the development of the project started seven years ago. Shortly after the announcement, the studio's director and president Fumihiko Yasuda revealed that PlayStation has supported the team and this project "throughout these many years," furthermore hinting at a close partnership between the two parties.

It is unknown how long Team Ninja has been co-working with XDEV, or what other studios might be involved in the production. Considering Rise of the Ronin will be launching sometime in 2024, there is plenty of time for both teams to share their experience and knowledge for this intriguing action title.
