Another year, another Dino Crisis no-show. It's been too long since we faced crises with dinos but Capcom continues to ignore the masses (yes, masses) who insist that a reboot or remake of Dino Crisis would be the ultimate best thing ever that existed in the history of video games.
Instead we have Exoprimal which features dinosaurs – and lots of 'em – but which isn't Dino Crisis and in fact has no relation to it either. Speaking to IGN, producer Ichiro Kiyokawa confrimed that Exoprimal is "its own unique thing and has no relationship to Dino Crisis". He also confirmed that Exoprimal will be a full-priced game, and not free-to-play as some had speculated.
Kiyokawa was more expansive on what Exoprimal is rather than what it isn't. Basically, this game will feature two opposing teams facing off against each other as well as AI enemies. In the jargon, it's a combination of PvP and PvE elements.
"I think that most of the PvPvE titles on the market are based around PvP, with some PvE elements included. ExoPrimal has a PvE focus that we feel is very enjoyable, exciting and unique", the producer said. He elaborated that the main mode is called Dino Survival where missions, stages, and dinos will change according to the player's progress in the game.
Kiyokawa said the team had wanted to challenge themselves to create something different to past Capcom titles and mentioned one beast slaying title in particular. "Instead of a game like Monster Hunter, where you face a single, powerful enemy, we thought that the experience of taking on and overcoming a huge horde of enemies had the appeal and potential to be the basis of a new IP," he said.
"We also thought that it would feel great to share that experience with others online, and so the basic concept of Exoprimal was born… Once we had established our gameplay concept dinosaurs were the first idea that came up for the enemies you would face."
Exoprimal is releasing on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One in 2023. A new trailer for the game released a couple days ago.
