Call of Duty: Warzone is no stranger to balance issues – most live-service FPS’ aren’t – but integrating a new weapon from another game entirely seems to have tipped the scales once more, sparking outrage. A Reddit post has gained traction after calling Warzone ‘unplayable’ due to the addition of the DMR.
What is the DMR? It’s a semi-auto tactical rifle that plenty of players now have horror stories about encountering. One user, by the name of FTwrath, said, “Dropped with randoms and we killed 2 squads, got loadout and pushed circle. Then ran into this DMR Trio that just held us down. 6 shots and I was dead as was my teammate in the kill cam. It’s not even fun anymore.”
The DMR does a hefty amount of damage, can fire off at long range, and tears through teams, as one player pointed out, “There’s no more ‘oh shit I’m being shot at.’ It’s ‘downed by a DMR from xxx direction.’ This is getting ridiculous.”
Perhaps, given the backlash and feedback from fans, the DMR will get a bit of a tune-up from Activision to try and bring balance back to the Warzone. A patch, at this point, is inevitable. However, it’s not the only weapon from Cold War to tilt the scales, and it likely wont be the last.
The akimbo Diamatti is also becoming a must that many players are using, and these new inclusions are quickly rendering older weapons useless, whether it’s the bruen, grau, or kilo. If Activision manages to bring back balance, perhaps players will go back to the guns of old, but right now, there’s just not much point if you want to stand a chance of a having a fair fight.
Trying to integrate Cold War with Warzone is a tricky job because it means that developers have to balance guns in one game only for a different team to have to re-work them for the other. The competitive multiplayer nature of a battle royale is vastly different to the more close-knit, faster-paced, tighter gunfights of traditional shooters, and so perhaps lugging a weapon from one to the other willy nilly without considering the key differences in the types of FPS’ that both Call of Duty’s play into isn’t the best way to go.
