Free Trine 4 DLC Is About Toby The Dog

Frozenbyte’s Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince was a pretty solid return to form for the platforming series. Mixing elements of old with some new ideas, its magical atmosphere gave it the chance to explore some crazy ideas with its levels. For players that pre-ordered the game, they were given DLC focused on Toby the Dog. Now, that level has been released for free for everyone else.

Called “Toby’s Dream,” it’s not exactly clear where this level takes place within the story of Trine 4. It likely doesn’t but is just a fun little add-on to give fans something extra. Even if it is inconsequential, more Trine 4 isn’t a bad thing. This level even seems to have a fairly unique environment from the rest of the game.

Toby’s Dream is currently available to download for owners of Trine 4. The main game is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. You’ll need to grab the level from your digital storefront of choice and then select it from Trine 4’s in-game map.

A sequel to a long-running series is typically not that revolutionary, but Trine 4 was an exception. After the relative failure of Trine 3: Artifacts of Power, developer Frozenbyte nearly went bankrupt. It took a few smaller-scale games and a rebuilding of confidence for the team to get back to the Trine series.

It’s not an overstatement to say that the success or failure of Trine 4 would have made or broken the studio. Thankfully, the game came out solid and Frozenbyte was able to let out a sigh of relief. It may not have been revolutionary, but it tapped into what fans liked about the original two Trine entries while bringing the game up to next-generation standards.

As mentioned above, this DLC was a pre-order bonus for fans when the game originally launched. That it’s now available to everyone is likely a thank you present for making Trine 4 successful. The game really deserves that praise, too, since it has a magical atmosphere that is very relaxing.

Whatever happens with the future of this series, Trine 4 is definitely worth playing. Make sure to give it a try sometime.
