Godfall Dev Explains How A Small Indie Company Got To Create AAA PS5 Launch Game

Godfall developer Keith Lee (not to be mistaken with WWE superstar Keith Lee) has revealed how his studio got to a place where it’s producing an AAA title set to launch along with Sony’s PS5.

The title was the first confirmed release for the PS5 and will be available as soon as the console drops this November 12 – it went gold back in September. The action RPG, described as a looter-slasher as it is based on the looter-shooter concept but more focused on melee action, is developed by Lee’s Counterplay Games and published by Borderlands creators Gearbox Software. The devs recently released a video outlining the game’s loot and progression system, showing how players can tweak their character builds based on the loot they snag. Prospective buyers should also note the game can’t run offline.

Lee was employed by the likes of Insomniac Games and Blizzard Entertainment in the past so he’s quite experienced when it comes to being involved in game creation, having worked on titles such as Diablo 3, Resistance: Fall of Man, and the original version of Ratchet & Clank. He later started up a mobile development studio in 2008, which he left three years later and, in 2014 co-founded Counterplay Games. The Studio’s first game was a free-to-play collectible card game called Duelist.

Speaking to VentureBeat in a recent interview, Lee explained how he met folks from Sony at last year’s E3 and sold them on the game’s value.

“When we were working on it last summer, that was when I started to showcase Godfall,” he said. “I had it on my laptop at GDC last year, and also E3 last summer. That was when we met with Sony. I was able to show Godfall to John Drake, before he left, and a bunch of other folks. It hit a lot of the bullet points, some of the aspects of what they would want for next-gen.”

Lee also told the publication his company was also fortunate to meet with Gearbox, whose relationship with Sony was also helpful.

“From a timing perspective, we also had the good fortune to meet with Gearbox. Of course, they had tons of experience building out action-RPGs with Borderlands,” he added. “They also knew the Sony guys. The three of us converged and locked down an agreement where Sony could support us and ensure that we’d be a PS5 launch title. A lot of it was timing, and being able to fill a potential gap that all parties wanted to hit for next-gen.”

As mentioned above, Godfall will release on PS5 launch day, November 12. It’s also set to launch for Windows.
