Joker and Kirito Join Forces in Newly Announced Persona 5 Royal x Sword Art Online Crossover

You’ll never see it coming! Bandai Namco has just announced that a Persona 5 Royal collaboration is coming to Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag and Sword Art Online: Integral Factor soon. Link start!

The collaboration was announced earlier today through the official Twitter for the Sword Art Online games, with an accompanying image of Kirito and Joker in their signature poses in front of a red Persona 5-esque backdrop. Not too much information has been revealed, but the tweet was also accompanied with a link to an official website for the collaboration.

Reactions to the news have been mixed, to say the least.

For those who don’t know, Sword Art Online is a rather divisive franchise. Reactions to the light novel, anime, and video games that follow protagonist Kazuto “Kirito” Kirigaya as he journeys into various MMORPG worlds range from the obsessed super fans who believe the show is the greatest piece of media, to antagonistic opposers who strongly believe like the show is not worth the hype. Persona 5 and the enhanced Persona 5 Royal is a franchise that has been nearly universally loved since its release in 2017. Given such polarizing and passionate feelings towards both stories, these mixed reactions aren’t all that surprising.

Some reactions towards the collaboration have been quite positive and optimistic:

The latest season of Sword Art Online, entitled Sword Art Online: Aliciziation has done significantly better in terms of reviews when compared to past seasons. Perhaps this collaboration will also produce positive feedback?

However, other Twitter users appear to be legitimately upset:

Despite Sword Art Online: Alicization‘s recent success, many people still have strong feelings about the first two polarizing seasons.

On the other hand, some are optimistic that this isn’t actually real. One such person, Joey Bizinger, more popularly known by his YouTube channel alias “The Anime Man,” is hopeful that this is just a joke.

Regardless of how you feel about the upcoming collaboration, there’s no denying that fans of both series are in for a unique gaming experience like nothing else.

Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag and Sword Art Online: Integral Factor are currently available for download for iOS and Android devices. Persona 5 Royal will be released in the west on March 31, 2020, for the PlayStation 4. It was released in Japan back in October 2019.
