A new 15-minute gameplay video of the remake of Mafia 1 has just been released and it makes the original look like a brand new game.

Considering the first Mafia game is now almost two decades old it makes sense that a simple remaster, such as Mafia 2 received, wouldn’t be enough.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a complete remake of the original open world action game and while it doesn’t pretend to be a 1:1 recreation it does feature many of the more memorable missions from the original, such as A Trip to the Country.

That’s what’s the focus of the video above is, complete with not just new graphics but improved dialogue, extra cut scenes, and deeper characterisation.

Although original developer Illusion Softworks has long since ceased to exist many of the original team have gone on to form new studio Hangar 13, so there’s a lot of them working on this remake.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is part of the Mafia: Trilogy, a new promotion that has seen the remaster of Mafia 2 and re-release of Mafia 3 in new definitive editions.

This is presumably all leading up to the announcement of Mafia 4, although publisher 2K has never confirmed that’s what’s going on – and if it is they’re probably waiting until the Mafia remake is out and the next gen has got underway.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is set to be released on 25 September on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
