A special Christmas Eve announcement for Magic fans comes courtesy of the official Magic: The Gathering Japanese Twitter account. Metal Gear character artist and Death Stranding art director Yoji Shinkawa will produce a special edition card for the upcoming Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty expansion.
That card will be Satoru Umezawa, a central figure of the recent short story which reveals the origins of planeswalker Kaito Shizuki. A descendant of Toshiro Umezawa, a card and character from the original Kamigawa block of the 2000s, Satoru continues his great great great (etc.) grandfather's legacy by heading the Hyozan Reckoners, a yakuza-style underground crime syndicate.
Since Shinkawa is drawing him, Satoru has a distinctive cyber-samurai aesthetic that reminds me a lot of Raiden from Metal Gear: Revengeance. Keep in mind that Satoru will only don his cyber outfit for the special edition card. His regular appearance will be far more business casual, according to the cards revealed today.
Satoru’s alternate art can be obtained as part of the Buy-A-Box promo. The Japanese Twitter account revealed that there will be more special edition cards coming from other great manga artists, so stay tuned for more reveals.
We got our first look at the cyberpunk aesthetic of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty during a preview event last week where planeswalker Kaito Shizuki took center stage. Kaito brings back the phasing mechanic that's been gone for decades until it was brought back in Commander 2017 and then again in 2021's core set.
Neon Dynasty also promises full-art lands inspired by Japanese Ukiyo-e paintings, a new set of legendary dragons, and everyone's favorite angry ogre demon Hidetsugu, only he'll have several neon borders to celebrate his return.
Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty arrives February 18, 2022.
