Steam recently released its list of the biggest games of 2021, both in terms of total revenue generated and in terms of players. The list had a bunch of familiar names, including Dota 2, GTA 5, PUBG, Apex Legends, and CS:GO, but there were also newcomers such as Valheim, Cyberpunk 2077, and New World.
But perhaps the biggest winner on Steam last year was Microsoft. As noted by games reporter and YouTuber Benji-Sales, three of the top 12 new games on Steam last year were Microsoft first-party titles, making Microsoft one of the biggest publishers on the platform.
"Microsoft / Xbox Game Studios have become one of the biggest publishers on PC / Steam with three of the top 12 highest gross revenue games of the year in 2021 being first-party releases," wrote Benji before offering his congratulations to Xbox and Microsoft.
Here are the top 12 new releases on Steam for 2021 in terms of revenue. Microsoft's games are noted in bold.
- Naraka Bladepoint
- Halo Infinite
- Forza Horizon 5
- New World
- Age of Empires IV
- Battlefield 2042
- Back 4 Blood
- Mass Effect LE
- Resident Evil Village
- Farming Sim 22
What’s exceptional for Microsoft this past year as well is that all of their games are actually pretty good. Halo Infinite really used that year-long delay to create a masterpiece, while Forza Horizon 5 is perhaps the best driving game on the market today. Age of Empires IV also returns as a triumph of the genre that will likely last for years to come.
Unfortunately, all these games are new releases so the only one that’s on sale on Steam is Forza Horizon 5, and that’s only with a 10% discount. Still, even at almost full price, it comes highly recommended.
The Steam Winter Sale is on now and will last until January 5. There are plenty of deals out there for 2021’s best games, including Cyberpunk 2077 and New World. Dive into a new game before the new year and save some money while you’re at it.
