December is bringing all sorts of exciting new Secret Lairs to Magic: The Gathering players. With 13 new and original Secret Lairs, there are plenty of opportunities for players to pick up new versions of their favorite cards. Some of these collections include cards that feature crossovers with other series, while others allow artists to interpret cards in their unique styles.
Some of these prices are estimations based on preorder prices, so don’t be surprised if the value of some cards and Secret Lair collections rise or fall after they’re released. These prices are taken from TCGplayer’s Market Value based on the regular, non-foil versions of the cards included in each Secret Lair on 12/8, and may change over time.
12/12 Transformers: Roll Out Or Rise Up – $20
The Rollout or Rise Up Secret Lair brings even more Transformer cards to the game. The cards included in this collection are extremely thematic and feature brand-new Transformers-themed artwork.
Cards like Fabricate depict Megatron’s rebirth as Galvatron and Dramatic Reversal featuring Optimus Prime rallying his fellow Autobots are great. For as cool as these cards are, they aren’t worth very much since so many of them are lower rarities or have seen multiple printings.
11/12 Artist Series: Aleksi Briclot – $35
Aleski Briclot has a long history of creating artwork for some of your favorite Magic cards. Having done the art on cards like Jace Beleren, Sliver Hivelord, and the Masterpiece Wurmcoil Engine.
In this Secret Lair, Briclot created new artwork for four powerful Eldrazi cards, Thought-Knot Seer, Inquisition of Kozilek, Reality Smasher, and Eldrazi Temple. These cards can be put together to create an impressive scene of some unfortunate adventurers stumbling across the three Eldrazi together.
10/12 Transformers: One Shall Stand, One Shall Fall – $50
These lands show off the world of the Transformers universe in stunning full-art depictions. The Forest and Swamp feature art from Joana LaFuente, while the Plains, Island, and Mountain are done by David Sondered.
The artwork on Future Sight is particularly stunning, being split into three sections with unique geometric designs separated by color.
5/12 Just Add Milk – $60
One of the weirdest Secret Lairs to drop, this one features three legendary creatures as if they were cereal box mascots. There’s Etali, Primal Storm which features a Sodoku puzzle on the back. Next up is Ghalta, Primal Hunger with a huge dinosaur-based crossword puzzle on the back. And finally is Ulamog, The Ceaseless Hunger and a matching puzzle as the back of the cereal box.
All these designs are done by Mike Burns and have been stylized like cartoony cereal boxes for kids.
4/12 Transformers: Optimus Prime vs. Megatron – $77
The ultimate showdown between the leaders of the Autobots and Decepticon are back in Magic. These are reversible cards, the front depicting the robot form of Optimus Prime, Megatron, and a close-up of The AllSpark.
On the back, Optimus and Megatron are in their vehicle forms while you get a wider view of the AllSpark. This Transformer drop sports borderless reskinned versions of Blightsteel Colossus, Darksteel Colossus, and Doubling Cube.
3/12 Time Trouble Two – $79
A sequel to another Secret Lair, Time Trouble Two sends three planeswalkers back through Magic’s history to an older style of card. Not only do these planeswalkers have a retro frame, but the description of their abilities is also written to reflect an older approach to describing a card's mechanics.
The Narset, Parter of Veils is depicted by Alex Horley-Orlandelli, Nissa, Who Shakes the World’s art is done by Scott M. Fischer, and Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas has art from Kev Walker. Each of these artists has a long history with Magic and has contributed to many fan-favorite cards over the years.
2/12 Special Guest: Kozyndan – Another Story – $80
Another Secret Lair from the married duo, this Secret Lair depicts several classic and powerful cards in Kozyndan’s whimsical and slightly absurd artwork.
Five cards come in this Secret Lair, Serra Ascendant, Rapid Hybridization, Demonic Consultation, Winds of Change, and Llanowar Elves. These cards are perfect for giving your Commander decks some flair.
1/12 The Art of Frank Frazetta – $95
This Secret Lair is a special tribute to the classic sci-fi and fantasy artist Frank Frazetta. Each card in this Secret Lair has been carefully picked to match the unique aesthetic that Frazetta brought to his work. The cards included are Field Marshal, Temporal Manipulation, Dark Ritual, Midnight Reaper, and Seize the Day.
The absolutely stunning Dark Ritual is an amazing take on the card, while Seize the Day is a piece of art as powerful as the card.
