Visual Concepts latest entry in the hugely successful NBA2K series is set to release this Friday (September 6th) and whilst it will no doubt be of great interest to regular fans of the yearly franchise, casual players would also do well to take a look too.
First of all, I am not a follower of the NBA, nor a dedicated player of the series.
My last experience with a basketball game was years back when reliving retro highlights in NBA Jam and the Space Jam movie tie-in.
Nevertheless, I was keen to see how the NBA2K series could appeal to new players with little to no experience of the sport – how they could enjoy a game celebrating its 20th release this year.
So with a fresh pair of eyes and an open mind I sat down for three full hours of high energy, on-court action.
Idris Elba and a star-studded cast showed up to add a much deeper sense of immersion to the story, its true-to-life characters and great cut-scenes (no Bugs Bunny though).
Beyond this, there were several more modes and features, such as the open-world Neighbourhood, where I could practice to my heart's content without the pressure of a big L.
Amidst all of NBA2K20’s additions this year, the stand-out change is the new ‘WNBA’ mode allowing users to play as any team from the Women’s NBA league.
Out of my three-hour playtest, this is the mode I used the most, and it’s clear the team at Visual Concepts have done a great job in making sure each player is respectfully different and not a cookie cutter add on to the wider game.
The graphics also look fantastic here and every dimple and each texture for the players has been very well realised.
An applaudable feat given the job at hand to add an entire new league worth of players to the game.
It’s just a shame that (for now) it’s the only mode you can use the WNBA players in. There’s no method of creating a player for the WBA in MyCareer, or in other modes, but this is an important first step.
It sets an important foundation which will no doubt propel the women’s league to new heights in years to come.

As someone with no knowledge of the sport, the cinematic story mode is where I was really sold on the game. It's something that pulled me in and actually made me care enough to want to keep pushing onward.
NBA 2K20 may seem like a daunting entry point if you’ve never played before, but it’s unquestionably the best opportunity to do so.
