New Pokémon Snap will be out in April with over 200 pokémon

The long-awaited sequel to Pokémon Snap will be out in just a few months’ time and seems to be keeping very close to the original formula.

There have been a lot of Pokémon spin-offs over the years, some of them good, some of them bad, and most of them an uninteresting point somewhere in between. But our absolute favourite has always been Pokémon Snap on the N64.

Every time we’ve met someone from The Pokémon Company we’ve asked about a sequel and now finally there is one, and it’s going to be released on April 30 for Nintendo Switch.

That means it’ll probably the one Pokémon game released closest to the franchise’s 25th anniversary, although it wasn’t mentioned in the initial promotional video.

Although it was announced a few months ago there haven’t been many details on the new game but it does seem to play in a similar way to the original, which was essentially an on-the-rails lightgun game but with a camera instead of a gun.

The sequel will take place in the islands of the Lental region, which includes jungles, deserts, and over 200 different pokémon types.

As before, you’ll be able to throw fruit to attract pokémon – or annoy them if you hit them on the head with one.

In the original seeing all the pokémon, or getting them to perform certain actions, involved some quite complex set-ups, so hopefully the sequel will be the same.

What’s brand new though is something called the Illumina phenomenon, which involves some pokémon and vegetation emitting a ‘special glow’.

What that’s about we’re not sure but apparently it’s one of the central mysteries of the story, as you try to help out Professor Mirror and his assistant Rita.
