Not long after the launch of Oculus Quest 2, a small number of users reported irritation on their faces due to the headset’s foam facial interface. While Facebook maintains there’s nothing wrong with the product, today there’s been a massive development with the company pausing all sales of the Oculus Quest 2 until next month. It is doing so to add silicone covers into each and every box.
So at the moment, there’s no way of purchasing either version of the Oculus Quest 2 from Oculus’ website or other retailers – listings have gone from Amazon and OverclockersUK for example. While Facebook has downplayed the issue, it’s obviously serious enough that all sales have been halted for the time being.
The downtime will be used to provide the silicone covers globally in every Oculus Quest 2 box so that customers can choose whether to use it or not. While this is for all new Quest 2’s sold, if you already own the headset then you can apply for a free silicone cover. For further information on that process follow this link. There’s been no mention of an availability window at this time.
Facebook said in an official statement: “Starting on August 24, all Oculus Quest 2 headsets will come with a silicone cover that fits over the Quest 2 foam facial interface included in every box. Existing Quest 2 owners can learn how to request a silicone cover here and we’re temporarily pausing sales globally as we work to provide the covers in every Quest 2 box, as part of our ongoing effort to ensure our products are safe and comfortable for everyone who uses them.”
Facebook hasn’t said if these silicone covers are an own-brand product or one already by companies like VR Cover. Third-party silicone covers have been available for a while now and are particularly useful when playing energetic VR videogames as they can be easily wiped down.
So if you’d been holding out on buying an Oculus Quest 2 now you’re going to have to wait a few more weeks to get hold of one, at least there will be an extra accessory in the box. For further updates on this announcement, keep reading VRFocus.
