Following the false alarm, it looks like we now know when the 2020 Overwatch Anniversary event will be kicking off in May. This time around, there are two sources which point to new skins and the return of Arcade Game Modes in the coming days. According to the latest leaks, the Overwatch Anniversary event will be kicking off on Tuesday, May 19, and will come with a range of new outfits to unlock.
It will also see the return of other event items that are usually locked, making it possible through credits and loot boxes.
It appears that patch notes for the new Overwatch Anniversary were shared online early, before the event was scheduled to go live.
It included information regarding what new skins are being planned, although there were pictures included.
The patch notes list designs like Masquerade Reaper, Dragoon Mercy, Little Red Ashe, Carbon Fiber Sigma, Fleur de Lis Widowmaker, and Masked Man McCree.
The leaked patch notes also confirmed that improvements to the Communication Wheel should be going live alongside the event.
“We have added many more communication options so you can customize your interactions in Overwatch,” the PTR description reads.
“To help you pick your favorites, go to Options -> Controls and scroll down to the Communication Wheel section.
“From here, you can choose from one of 26 different options for each sector of the wheel. You can change out your choices and swap around their positions within the wheel. Now, you can still tell your team “I Need Healing,” but you can also tell them you are “On My Way” so they should “Press the Attack!”
“New options are now available to customize the Communications Wheel, Shortcuts are now customizable; pick from a set of 26 different communication options, and additional keybindings are available to support more voiceover lines.”
Last year’s event kicked off on May 21 and had a June 10 end date scheduled. That means this year’s Overwatch celebration would be kicking off earlier than usual.
2019’s Overwatch event also included all the seasonal brawls being offered in rotations throughout the event, something which has a good chance of coming back in 2020.
More details covering 2019’s Anniversary event can be found below: “To celebrate Overwatch’s third anniversary, we’re adding a cavalcade of new skins, highlight intros, emotes, and sprays, plus making all seasonal brawls and items from past years available once again!
“That’s not all: log in between May 21 and June 10 to earn a Legendary Anniversary Loot Box containing at least one legendary item. Don’t miss Overwatch’s biggest anniversary celebration yet!
“Along with a slew of new skins, highlight intros, emotes, and sprays, Anniversary Loot Boxes have a chance to contain items from past Anniversary and seasonal events.
“Each purchase of the 50 Anniversary Loot Boxes bundle also includes a bonus Legendary Anniversary Loot Box containing at least one legendary item.
“In addition to earning Anniversary Loot Boxes by playing or purchasing them in the shop, unlock one Legendary Anniversary Loot Box just for logging in. Don’t wait too long: Anniversary Loot Boxes will vanish when the event ends on June 10.”
While it seems pretty likely that the 2020 Overwatch Anniversary event will be going live next week, plans can always change, and it will be worth tracking Blizzard social media channels.
