The new Ratchet & Clank for PS5 will have options for both 30fps and 60fps, but the latter won’t support 4K resolution.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has quickly become one of the most anticipated titles for the PlayStation 5 and early adopters can look forward to it being one of the first games available for the console.
So far, it’s definitely a visual spectacle, that appears to be pushing the PlayStation 5 to its limits and it’s now been revealed that the game is capable of running at 60 frames per second and supports 4K resolution… just not at the same time.
This comes from studio Insomniac’s Marcus Smith and Mike Daly as part of an interview with Japanese outlet Famitsu, as translated by fans on ResetEra.
‘In this game, we’ve focused on balancing the comfort of the action with beautiful graphics while allowing players to choose between two different resolutions and frame rates,’ they explained.
‘One is a 4K resolution at 30fps, and the other is a lower resolution at 60fps. We’re planning to offer either of these two options.’
The original PlayStation 2 Ratchet & Clank games ran at 60fps, but Insomniac opted to drop this for the PlayStation 3 games, which all ran at 30fps for the sake of better graphics.
Many will welcome the return of 60fps gameplay but the fact that there are two separate options, with one prioritising frame rate and the other graphics, does suggest that the PlayStation 5 isn’t quite as powerful as many would’ve hoped.
It’s already been reported that Insomniac’s other big PlayStation 5 release, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, will offer a similar compromise, as will Bluepoint’s Demon’s Souls remake.
Whether post-launch games can manage to offer both options at once remains to be seen, although that may be the selling point of a potential PS5 Pro…
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will release during the ‘launch window’ of the PlayStation 5.
