Gamescom Opening Night Live is underway and it just gave us our first proper look at Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart for PS5.
Back in June we got a sneak peek at Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart as part of the PS5 games showcase. The trailer showed off seamless transitions between different dimensions, each of them loading in a flash thanks to the power of PS5’s SSD.
Developer Insomniac said at the time that this couldn’t have been done on previous generations of console hardware. PS5’s SSD is a “game-changer” and is “screamingly fast,” according to the developer, allowing the studio to “build worlds and project players from one place to another in near instantaneous speeds.”
Here’s the new trailer from Gamescom ONL:
As you can see from the trailer, Ratchet and Clank are up against Dr. Nefarious in their first foray into a next-gen rendition of Megalopolis. The trailer gives us a look at the game’s gunplay – including some footage of Ratchet using the Enforcer shotgun – as well as introducing its eponymous rifts, which allow Ratchet to instantly teleport himself through space and time.
These rifts were only able to be realized thanks to the power of the PS5 SSD – its “pure horsepower” allowed the devs to fling the player from planet to planet at “lightning fast” speeds, according to an interview conducted after the Gamescom reveal.
As well as hopping through dimensions as Ratchet and his little robot buddy, you’ll be able to take control of a female, alternate dimension version of Ratchet for the very first time.
It’s worth noting that, according to the devs, you’ll be able to enjoy Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart even if you’ve never played a Ratchet and Clank game before – however, seasoned players will be treated to some familiar faces.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is coming exclusively to PS5 during its launch window, but there’s no specific date yet.
