Remember back in the day when Bethesda got dragged by the entire gaming community introducing Horse Armor as a paid DLC package?
If you need a quick history lesson, Horse Armour was a downloadable content (DLC) package containing armor that could be placed on a player's horse in the Xbox 360 release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
It was the start of the long-derided practice of slicing out content and selling it on for a premium – something that was rampant in the industry lsat generation.
Things have got better now – we have in-app purchases instead, woo! – but it looks like we're still getting horse armour, thanks to Red Dead Online.

Well, more specifically, we're getting Horse Masks – introduced to the game as part of Red Dead Online’s Summer Update.
These new cosmetic items make your steed stand out amongst all the other nags tied up at the corral, and I guess give you bragging rights to boot.
You can get Horse Masks as rewards via the Outlaw Club, a new season-pass type item added to the game recently.
Once you unlock certain criteria, you'll begin unlocking Horse Masks and they'll be sent to your stable. So here's how to find/equip them:
- Head to a stable
- Navigate to “Tack and Services”
- Navigate to “Saddles”
- Select your currently equipped saddle
- Head to the bottom of the list, select “Masks”
Now, you browse through your currently unlocked masks and get your favourite bit of tack on your reliable equine companion.
We'll keep you updated if anything in this guide changes.
