Back in April, we saw leaks that suggested that Capcom is currently at work on both Resident Evil 3 Remake and Resident Evil 8. Then, in August, we saw the suggestion that Capcom was recruiting testers for the games again.
Now, as we've seen Resident Evil 3 Remake formally announced by the studio, fans are patiently waiting to hear what comes next for the franchise.
And it looks like we may not have to wait much longer to hear more about the game.
An email from Capcom, which was forwarded to IGN earlier this week, went out to the Resident Evil Ambassadors, a well-known community of series fans that has been used by Capcom to test games before.
thanked fans for Resident Evil 2's nomination to the Game Awards and announced a new ranking system will be coming to the Ambassador's programme, with fans that ascend the ranks becoming eligible to receive 'invitations to a playtest session of our unannounced title.'
We know that Resident Evil 3 Remake is coming, and the multiplayer portion of that game (Resident Evil Resistance) is already out of the bag, too… so it makes sense that Resident Evil 8 will be the next game out the door, right?
Previous rumours from trusted sources have pegged this title as the next release in the series from Capcom, so we're hoping we'll hear an announcement about the game soon.
Before the announcement of Resident Evil 7, a leaker known as AestheticGamer correctly revealed information about the soft reboot of the series – tweeting details about its existence and setting. These leaks turned out to be pretty on the money.
According to Resident Evil fansite Biohaze, development studio Capcom Division 1 approached the aforementioned Japanese Resident Evil Ambassadors to ask them to help test an in-development title.
Back in May Cacpcom noted it was “unable to comment on the specific number of titles or release windows, there are numerous titles currently being developed internally with the RE Engine” so it could even be another title that we've not yet heard about.
"The series will be kinda “unofficially” almost annual for the next few years, though of course as game development goes anything could be delayed," says AestheticGamer.
"For example, RE8 got a bit delayed and I can say to you now that you shouldn’t expect it until next-gen is on the table. What is on the table is REmake 3, but REmake 3 is…Not what a lot of people are probably going to expect.
"It’s not being made by the same team that made REmake 2, in fact, it’s not even being internally developed by Capcom Division 1 at all. Who is developing it is very interesting, but for another day, it’ll be coming about a lot sooner than people probably are expecting."
This all seems to line up with what we've seen of Resident Evil Resistance and Resident Evil 3 Remake so far… we just wonder how accurate the information about Resident Evil 8 could be.
