Sonic 2 movie is a massive hit but where have all the Sonic games gone?

The Sonic The Hedgehog 2 film is set to become the highest-grossing video game movie ever, which could have a big influence on Sonic games.

Back around 2018, after the relative failure of the Tomb Raider movie reboot, it looked like Hollywood was finally giving up on video game movies. So it’s a bit of a surprise to find that Sonic The Hedgehog, of all things, has been the saviour of the whole concept.

Despite coming out just as the pandemic began, the original Sonic movie is currently the highest grossing video game movie ever in the US, with an opening of $58,018,348 (£44.5m). However, that’s now been smashed by the sequel, which managed an estimated $71 million (£54m) opening.

It’s also the fifth highest opening of the pandemic for Paramount Pictures (after A Quiet Place: Part 2, Scream, Jackass Forever, and The Lost City) and the highest ever US opening for a Jim Carrey movie.

2019’s Pokémon: Detective Pikachu had an opening of $54.4m and until Sonic it was the highest grossing video game movie, but it was still viewed as a disappointment in comparison to the popularity of Pokémon in general.

After that comes Uncharted, which, while successful for a video game movie, was a pretty minor hit by normal standards and $10 million behind Pokémon.

It’s obvious what all this means: not only more Sonic movies (a sequel and Knuckles spin-off TV show have already been confirmed) but more video game movies in general.

Whether you care about the films or not though, what’s going to be interesting is how all of this affects the games they’re based on, many of which haven’t had a new title in years.

It’s almost five years now since the disappointing Sonic Forces and there’s still little clue as to when follow-up Sonic Frontiers is going to be released. The game is currently scheduled for late 2022 but there’s never been any real gameplay footage shown and it could easily be delayed.

Uncharted 4 was widely promoted as the end of the franchise, or at least Nathan Drake’s story, and despite rumours there’s been no official sign of any new games.

There was an update on Tomb Raider just recently, but the new game is still years away, while the sixth highest grossing video game movie is the now thoroughly old hat The Angry Birds Movie. After that is Rampage, which hasn’t had a proper new entry in 16 years and always seemed a bizarre choice for adaptation.

Despite how much synergy some people like to pretend exists between Hollywood and video games there’s never been very much evidence of it, with video games never releasing at the same time as movies and rarely ever acknowledging their existence.

Whether that’s going to change if video game movies start to become more successful remains to be seen but the fact remains that there is no new Sonic the Hedgehog game to play after watching the film, and there won’t be for some time.
