Sony Details PSVR 2’s New See-Through View And Cinematic Modes

Sony is making the PSVR 2 the most convenient VR headset on the market. As outlined by senior staff product manager Yasuo Takahashi on PlayStation Blog, the PSVR 2 will let you see where you’re going and remake your play area on the fly.

See-through View allows PSVR 2 users to see what’s outside their headset thanks to a pair of cameras on the front. The player can activate see-through mode by pressing the function button on the headset or by bringing up the PSVR 2 card in the Control Center, which also lets the user modify other key headset functions such as the play area.

Speaking of customizing the play area, the PSVR 2 will let players modify their out-of-bounds markers while in-game. External cameras on the headset will scan the room, while the player themselves will be able to fine-tune the boundaries using the PSVR 2 controllers. Being able to both see and modify the play area while in-game is a huge quality-of-life improvement compared to the original model and will definitely encourage people to upgrade.

Takahashi had a few more features to share in today’s blog. You can easily use the PS5’s HD camera to broadcast yourself while playing, or you can take in movies on the PSVR 2 using the new Cinematic Mode, which broadcasts standard HDR video format (1920×1080) at 24/60Hz and also 120Hz frame rate. The standard VR Mode for gameplay displays at 4000×2040 HDR video format (2000 x 2040 per eye) with 90Hz/120Hz frame rate.

So far, the PSVR 2 has a bunch of games in development we’re excited to try, plus more games will be announced “soon.” We’ll also soon get a launch date for the hardware itself, which is expected later this year or early 2023.
