Two separate sources claim that the Xbox Series X gets worryingly hot even when it’s on standby, especially the storage expansion.
Although the PlayStation 5 seems to have solved the loudness problem of the PlayStation 4 it seems the Xbox Series X may have picked up a new issue: it gets extremely hot when in use.
Reports from two separate sources have both said the console gets worrying warm even when not playing games, with French journalist Ken Bogard of JeuxVideo joking that could ‘heat up your flat with it’.
‘The Series X is hot, like really hot! It doesn’t make any noise, but damn it’s hot! The console is emitting heat like crazy. It’s almost like a fireplace shaft’, said Bogard, as translated by VGC.
In separate comments, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Bakkalar also mentioned the heat given off by the console and suggested that it does so even when in standby mode.
Not only that but he claims to have burnt his hand by touching the console’s infamously expensive storage expansion, although he doesn’t seem to have seriously injured himself.
‘It seems like this thing might be doing something while you’re not using it, to the point where it needs to exhaust heat’, he said.
Everyone seems to agree that the Xbox Series X runs impressively silently but so far only these two journalists have mentioned the excess heat.
Whether that means they had faulty units or the others just didn’t notice is not clear, but since no outlet has been provided with Xbox Series X games they’ve only been running backwards compatible games and the dashboard – which may mean the amount of heat could increase with more taxing games.
It’s unclear when Microsoft will make those available for testing but since the console is due to be released on November 10 it presumably won’t be long.
