It should come as no surprise, but Phil Spencer has confirmed that the current Xbox Series X|S models on the market will remain the only models for the next several years. Spencer went on to reassure Xbox fans that they won't miss out on any new developments in 2022 if they decide to pick up a Series X or Series S in 2021.
In a recent discussion with IGN, Spencer talked about plans to release new Xbox consoles in the coming years – similar to how Xbox One saw the Xbox One X and Xbox One S. For now, it sounds like there are no plans to expand the hardware lineup, and both X|S will remain the flagship products for the foreseeable future.

"There's nothing that's going to come out next year that's going to make you feel like, oh, I should have waited," Spencer said. "These are the consoles that we have in markets for years. And we built them with that in mind, and I love the tech that's in there and that capability, and that's where our focus is going."
While there's nothing currently in development, Spencer does leave the door open for an eventual console update:
"We want to do hardware because it actually creates new opportunities, and I've said before, it could be at the lower end that we find more immediate opportunities."
At any rate, you can sleep easy knowing your Xbox Series X|S won't be outdated in a few short years. Of course – that's with the caveat that you actually manage to snag one to begin with, as inventory issues are still plaguing most retailers. Semiconductor shortages are the main culprit, and it's estimated that the current issues could persist until 2023.
By that time, Microsoft might be ready to start talking about a beefed-up version of the Series X, or even a toned-down one that's more affordable than the Series S and plays nice with Xbox Game Pass.
