Genshin Impact rewarding fans for doing absolutely nothing

Usually, when a video game goes down by accident, developers respond by gifting users something to make up for lost time. It’s a little more unusual to get a reward for regularly-scheduled maintenance, though.

Genshin Impact servers will be temporarily inaccessible later this week, during which developer Mihoyo will address some “known issues” according to a news post on the official website. The developer’s planned maintenance will start at 7 p.m EDT on Oct. 21, and is estimated to last around four hours.

For every hour of downtime, however, all Genshin Impact players will receive 60 Primogems, a currency that can be used to make Wishes to gain new characters and weapons. If the maintenance ends sooner than expected, Mihoyo says it will still give all players a minimum of 240 Primogems. It’s not much, but it should be enough for at least one pull. You also literally don’t have to do anything to get it, other than being at least Adventure Rank 5 and checking your mail within 30 days before it expires.

Such an approach is typical for gacha games, where stamina is determined by the passage of real-world time — scheduled maintenance, in those cases, interferes with base mechanics. But Mihoyo also regularly gives out a handful of Primogems when the developer fixes certain bugs — I’ve logged in many a time to claim a small Primogem reward over an issue that I never personally experienced. While I’m not swimming in Primogems because of this generosity, it still rules to get a small gift for just existing in Genshin Impact.
