No Man’s Sky launched as a first-person game back in 2016, and this summer, players will be able to enter its cosmic expanse themselves: Support for virtual reality headsets on both PlayStation 4 and Windows PC is coming to the game, developer Hello Games announced Monday.
The virtual reality support on PlayStation VR and SteamVR will be part of the free Beyond update for No Man’s Sky, which developer Hello Games announced earlier this month. It won’t just be a VR mode within the game — the studio referred to it as the “entire game brought to life in virtual reality,” adding that “the team has worked so hard to make this a true VR experience rather than a port.” Here’s a description of the VR functionality from Hello Games:
Grab the joystick and thruster to fly your starship over an unexplored alien planet as you peer out of the cockpit at the view below. Reach into your backpack to grab your multitool, touch it to switch to terrain manipulation, and carve out intricate shapes with unprecedented control. Play in multiplayer and casually wave to your non-VR friends or fist bump your PSVR peers.
VR support is one of three major features in Hello Games’ Beyond update. The patch will also introduce a significant expansion of the game’s existing multiplayer functionality, which the studio described as a “radical new social and multiplayer experience which empowers players everywhere in the universe to meet and play together.” Beyond will be the “most ambitious chapter so far” in No Man’s Sky’s history, according to Hello Games, which has yet to reveal the third piece of the update.
No Man’s Sky debuted on PlayStation 4 and Windows PC, and was later ported to Xbox One. Microsoft’s console is not currently compatible with any VR headsets. (SteamVR supports both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.)
