Respawn founder: Jedi Fallen Order ‘is a single-player story game!’

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a strictly singleplayer game and it will have no microtransactions, the founder of Respawn Entertainment said yesterday at Star Wars Celebration.

“It’s a single-player story game,” Zampella said as the crowd watching live cheered. “Yeah. No multiplayer, no microtransactions …” he added as the crowd cheered louder. “It’s a story game!” (See timestamp 5:04:29 below.)

Respawn’s traditional approach to Fallen Order seems to belie publisher Electronic Arts’ current priorities for its big games, particularly ones under license, which emphasize software as a service and other living-games qualities.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 launched in late 2017 with a progression system tied to random drops from loot boxes, which could be bought for real money. This alienated many fans, and resulted in a suspension of real-money transactions before the game’s launch, and significant changes when they were reintroduced about six months later. Also, in January, EA confirmed that it had binned an untitled open-world Star Wars video game, which had spent almost six years in early development.

More will be revealed during a Star Wars Celebration panel discussing Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in depth at 2:30 p.m. EDT (watch it live). Zampella repeated the game’s elevator pitch, in which a Padawan (Jedi apprentice) has survived Order 66 (Emperor Palpatine’s campaign to wipe all of them out) and embarks on an adventure of indeterminate purpose. The game is set in the aftermath of Revenge of the Sith, the period Obi-Wan Kenobi grimly called “the dark times,” before the Rebel Alliance organized to blow up the first Death Star.

In his appearance yesterday, Zampella also revealed the official poster for the game, confirming what was seen earlier in an accidental leak on Amazon on Thursday.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is expected to launch in late 2019, around the time that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the ninth and final film in the series’ trilogy-of-trilogies, premieres. PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One are the platforms.
