This flagship exclusive game for the Playstation 5 launch doesn’t let fans down.
The semi-sequel to 2018 PS4 hit Spider-Man featuring his new sidekick is uber cool, packed with action and blockbuster from the off.
You play Miles Morales, a trainee pal of Peter Parker who has also been bitten by a radioactive spider and now boasts amazing superpowers too.
But where that original game was Peter at his peak experience in the web-slinging role, this one shows a young fresh-eyed New York lad slowly learning the ropes.
So it plays very differently, with Miles – who has been handed ‘city protector’ status by his mentor while Pete goes away – swinging clumsily across the city and making novice mistakes as he runs into trouble.
And that trouble comes thick and fast with a blistering movie-like story of around eight to ten hours and a load of side missions to give you an incentive to come back for more once you’ve finished the campaign.
New York looks simply incredible in this game.
Set at Christmas, the attention to detail and super smooth PS5 graphics really bring the city alive as folk go about there business preparing for the big day and snow, garish lights and decorations make you feel all festive inside.
Gameplay is great with developers Insomniac refusing to sit idle and offering up a load of new electric abilities for our hero.
It means brutal takedowns and chained-together fight combos that stun visually on-screen thanks to the new console’s extra computing firepower.
Sackboy – A Big Adventure review: Charming, cute and brilliant PS5 platform fun
It’s tough too, you’re often trapped in a sandbox style environment, battling hoards of oncoming enemies with ever-increasing skills of their own.
It’s a real challenge as you end up using every inch of the controller to do battle and ensure that when the dust settles, you’re the victor.
I loved the subtle use of the new DualSense controller too, little shocks and wobbles within the handset, even say when your character is travelling the subway, throbbing rhythmically with the rails underneath.
It all adds a realism that’s impressive and shows what the future will increasingly be like with this new machine.
Dad spends 13 hours glued to eight different screens to secure PS5 for son
Overall, you do need to remember that this is a glorified addition to the base game and not a totally fully fledged title of the same size as the original.
So it is more limited and fans will burn through it a lot quicker.
However as a tech demo for the PS5 it’s immense.
And for those that love a fresh, modern take on superhero storytelling, this is a brilliant exclusive game for Sony.
